Dawgs Sink Pirate’s Ship

October 17, 2011

The East Carolina University Pirates sailed into last weekend with the hopes of showing the magic that sparked their national championship run last summer. The Dawgs were having none of it as they swiftly and, quite frankly, easily dispatched of the reigning champs.

It’s hard to wholly summarize a weekend in which the Bulldogs score 36 runs over 3 games. Needless to say, the ECU pitching staff was like a conveyor belt of fun for the UGA offense. Every hitter on the roster recorded at least 1 hit and at least 1 RBI or run on the weekend. The ECU defense definitely helped recording frequent errors. However, nothing can be taken away from the Dawgs who cashed in all the mistakes with timely hits and productive outs.

On the other side of the ball, the pitching and defense matched the impressive offensive outing. In game 1, starting pitcher Aaron Bender cruised through 5 innings of work allowing 2 earned runs with nearly flawless defense behind him. Things got a little dicey in the later innings, but the Georgia offense was not to be outdone. Game 1 ended with a final score of 12-6 in favor of the Dawgs.

Game 2 was the second start of the season for pitcher Morgan Tebbetts. Tebbetts, who had a debut to forget against KSU the week before, put the team on his back and smoked the ECU hitters for 5 innings. Tebbetts allowed no earned runs and struck out far more than he walked in an appearance that has UGA fans excited about this pitchers potential. Georgia cruised to a 7-2 victory.

Game 3 saw the season debut of career workhorse Michael Elliott. Elliott resumed his usual form mowing down ECU for 5 innings. The UGA offense posted a 15 spot on the board, making Elliott’s dominating performance unnecessary, but still appreciated. ECU added insult to injury when they lost their composure in game 3. Unaccustomed to taking such a pounding, the Pirates lost their cool and engaged in some pretty poor sportsmanship. In this fan’s perspective, ECU embarrassed their team and university with their lewd language and behavior in route to their 15-2 defeat at the hands of a level-headed Georgia team.

In the end, the long road trip was made worth it for the Dawgs as they picked up the sweep and a good bit of confidence. UGA hopes to ride this momentum through the rest of the fall season.

Glory, glory!

Dawgs Knock off Summer Rust

October 11, 2011

Saturday’s theme was stranded base runners, as your Georgia Bulldogs traveled to Kennesaw State University for a double header. It seemed inning after inning the Dawgs put runners in scoring position early in the inning, but couldn’t get the timely hits to cash them in. Rookie Blaine Broth had a great debut at the plate with back to back doubles in his first two collegiate at bats. Other offensive contributors were Michael Adams with a double and a pair of walks, Chris Holmes with a single and a walk, and Clark Wright and Dylan McCarter with a single each. Second year pitcher Andrew Lanham took the mound for Georgia, pitching in and out of jams for 4+ innings allowing 3 hits, 5 walks, 2 hit batters, and 5 runs before giving way to Mason Gepp and Adam Hall out of the bullpen. When the dust settled, Georgia looked up at a disappointing 6-2 loss in the fall opener.

Game 2 was an offensive shootout as newcomer Morgan Tebbetts took the hill for the good guys. Tebbetts allowed 9 runs in 3+ innings of work, but got some good game experience to prepare him for more important series in the future. Reliable lefty sidewinder Kyle Betz came in to calm the KSU bats down allowing just one run until Matt Bishop slammed the door in the final 2 innings allowing no additional runs. On the offensive side, the Dawgs scrapped and scrapped to stay in the game, rallying inning after inning to keep things close. In the final inning, trailing by 2 runs, Georgia put the first 2 batters of the inning on. Unfortunately, the Dawgs kept up the days theme of stranding runners as the next 3 hitters couldn’t get the job done- leaving the tying runs in scoring position. The offense was paced by Adam Hall with 2 hits and Ron Fowler, Trevor Czernowski, and Mason Gepp each with 1 hit. In the end, the scoreboard read 10-8 in the Owls favor, dropping Georgia to 0-2 in the early days of the fall exhibition season.

Georgia travels north to Eastern Carolina University this weekend for a 3 game set against the reigning World Series champs.
