Dawgs Knock off Summer Rust
Saturday’s theme was stranded base runners, as your Georgia Bulldogs traveled to Kennesaw State University for a double header. It seemed inning after inning the Dawgs put runners in scoring position early in the inning, but couldn’t get the timely hits to cash them in. Rookie Blaine Broth had a great debut at the plate with back to back doubles in his first two collegiate at bats. Other offensive contributors were Michael Adams with a double and a pair of walks, Chris Holmes with a single and a walk, and Clark Wright and Dylan McCarter with a single each. Second year pitcher Andrew Lanham took the mound for Georgia, pitching in and out of jams for 4+ innings allowing 3 hits, 5 walks, 2 hit batters, and 5 runs before giving way to Mason Gepp and Adam Hall out of the bullpen. When the dust settled, Georgia looked up at a disappointing 6-2 loss in the fall opener.
Game 2 was an offensive shootout as newcomer Morgan Tebbetts took the hill for the good guys. Tebbetts allowed 9 runs in 3+ innings of work, but got some good game experience to prepare him for more important series in the future. Reliable lefty sidewinder Kyle Betz came in to calm the KSU bats down allowing just one run until Matt Bishop slammed the door in the final 2 innings allowing no additional runs. On the offensive side, the Dawgs scrapped and scrapped to stay in the game, rallying inning after inning to keep things close. In the final inning, trailing by 2 runs, Georgia put the first 2 batters of the inning on. Unfortunately, the Dawgs kept up the days theme of stranding runners as the next 3 hitters couldn’t get the job done- leaving the tying runs in scoring position. The offense was paced by Adam Hall with 2 hits and Ron Fowler, Trevor Czernowski, and Mason Gepp each with 1 hit. In the end, the scoreboard read 10-8 in the Owls favor, dropping Georgia to 0-2 in the early days of the fall exhibition season.
Georgia travels north to Eastern Carolina University this weekend for a 3 game set against the reigning World Series champs.
